“Lord of Light is one of the true classiscs of New Wave science fiction. I try to re-read it every few years. The plot centers around the virtually immortal crew of an ancient starship now in control of a planet modeled after a traditional Indian society. The surviving crew members have taken the avatars of the Hindu pantheon and control the mere humans through the "Lords of Karma", those who decide whether "re-incarnation" (quite literally) will be bestowed upon the world's citiazens, one at a time. Some of the crew members dissent from this system in surprising ways. The plot and the characters are top-notch. ”
