I didn't expect to enjoy this, thought Woolf's style may not be to my liken, but by the fourth page I was happy with my decision to pick it up. Mrs Dalloway is told during one day in London and switches through different characters on their thoughts as the final chapter, a party, approaches. I found the stream of consciousness style exciting and the writing was excellent, although at times due to the streamy, modernist prose it went off in different directions, but was more controlled than other books of the same genre/style. Was nice to read about a London before WW2 and after WW1 and to peer into the effects that 'the great war' had on people. My only mistake was picking this up whilst reading Joyce's Ulysses, one presumes this was Woolf's reaction to Joyce's book which she did not care for. Recommended.

It is a fine example of stream of consciousness style of storytelling. I found the character of Septimus extremely thought-provoking, but intensely disturbing. He seems more like the detached alter ego of the philosophical mind.

There are good and bad aspects of this book. However I value efficiency, especially with words, and 80% of this book is a complete waste of words.

Virginia Woolf has amazing characters and character development. She makes really great statements about life, especially society in the modernist era. This book has some of the best one liners that I've ever read, but... they're about 25 pages apart. Oh! In between those one liners are run on sentences and really horrible metaphors. Reading this book was like getting a root canal. If I wasn't reading it for a class I would have put it down after the first 15 pages.

A great modern novel, "Mrs Dalloway" manages to beautifully communicate the complexities of modernity with Woolf's use of stream of consciousness. It's a cheery version of "The Wasteland." A must read, and an exemplary novel for understanding 20th century modernity.

I have to say I was a bit disappointed only because it was one of those books that I waited too long to read. So many people told me how great and wonderful it was that I had too high of expectations. It is incredibly beautiful but I kept expecting more than there was.
