The author does a very good job of describing prison, so you actually felt like you got a good picture what it was like to be in a women's prison. Occaisionally choppy, so that's why it gets 4 stars.” see full review » see other reviews » |

However, I found myself rolling my eyes at times at Kerman's descriptions of all these wonderful women she was in prison with. I believe that there are women in there who shouldn't be (do we really need to be locking up pacifist nuns, after all?) but I'm sure most of them are in there because they have some rather serious problems. If you took Piper Kerman's word for it, you would think that all drug offenders were poor unfortunates who had no other choice but to stuff cocaine up their bums. I'm all for prison reform and ensuring that people are better when they come out than when they went in but I don't for a second believe that everyone in prison is just a tad maladjusted and would be a grand contributing member of society with a kind word and some job placement. All that said, there are some genuinely sweet and funny moments in the book and it is worth reading for an insider's look into a minimum security federal women's prison.”

I enjoyed reading her experiences and marveled at how well she (and her family) apparently handled the situation. I felt empathy for others she encountered in the prison system who did not have a reliable support network.”

“I loved this book, a first-person account of the author's life in Danbury Federal Prison for women.”

I definitely chuckled in a few places, but eventually lost interest and started reading another book, then never went back to it. Not one I'd recommend.”
