Whatever...I found myself thinking about the changes life, circumstances & the years produce, for better or worse while reading this book. The story begins shortly after WW2 when a war...” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It“I wasn't into this book. The story seems to go on and on and then, well, just ended. It just wasn't that interesting.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“Anne Tyler creates (or observes in real life) some very colorful characters, probably like you and I. When I first started reading some of her books, they were exciting, had a plot with very unique characters. But after several of her books, it's become a bit tiresome reading about the common ordinary exploits of these people. I have enough of the common, ordinary hum-drum in my own life without adding more. I'm going to take a break from her. However the quality of her writing is terrific.”

It's a funny book in that it just tells the story of a marriage that should have never happened, but did. There's no solution to their problems, life just carries on regardless and Tyler describes it beautifully. Rather depressing though.”

I continued to grow in disbelief about his choices, which, I guess, is one thing that fascinated me about the story.”

And actually, the last chapters were what I liked most — seeing the effects of this family on its various members. I love it when a book "sticks with me" after I've finished it. At the beginning, I would never have expected that this one would. But I really liked the very last paragraphs. Made me think. My assessment as to the title is that the husband in this marriage always wondered if they were "doing marriage" right, if they were amateurs, if they should ever have gotten married. (And they surely messed up their kids along the way.) But by the end, I think he realized that NO ONE is an expert at marriage; everyone is moving ahead with what they have, and it's hard work. I think this book could lead to interesting bookclub discussions re the psychology of families!”

But the ending is kinda abrupt and non-satisfying just like most of Anne Tyler's novels”
