The main goals of these notes are (i) to present a mathematically precise formulation of the theory of quantum fields in curved spacetime, (ii) to present some of the principal results of the theory-particularly the Unruh and Hawking effects-and (iii) to discuss, in depth, some of the ramifications of the Hawking effect, particularly with regard to the remarkable analogy between the laws of black hole physics and the laws of thermodynamics.
