I read this in my Post-Colonial British Literature class. I've rated it at two stars because I didn't like the content, but Swift's writing is so amazing that it made me like it in spite of myself. So really I would rate it at a two and a half stars.

a biography of an area and generations of a family that builds to a personal history of the narrator. The connections of family, person and place.

I consider this to be the most beautiful book I've ever read. What Swift does is artful, he weaves personal history with geographic history and political history, to get the fullest picture of life I've ever seen. Simply elegant. This book changed the way I look at writing, reading, history and the individual's role in the world.
