Peace Like a River

by Leif Enger

To the list of great American child narrators that includes Huck Finn and Scout Finch, let us now add Reuben "Rube" Land, the asthmatic 11-year-old boy at the center of Leif Enger's remarkable first novel, Peace Like a River. Rube recalls the events of his childhood, in small-town Minnesota circa 1962, in a voice that perfectly captures the poetic, verbal stoicism of the northern... (read more)

Christian Fiction 313 books / 480 members / 1393 posts Who are your favorite authors?

Favorite types of fiction?

What authors have a Biblically based moral theme even if it is not specifically a Christian book? I'm thinking of Tolkien, Lewis, Chesterton.

Let's talk, explore, compare and share.

A series of unfortunate choices 24 books / 47 members / 126 posts Okay, so what's your biggest, latest disappointment with a book that looked or sounded great, or with a book suggested by someone who you really really respect that turned out to be a dog, or maybe just your favorite bad book of all time....?

My latest letdown was "Special Topics in Calamity Physics," which was way too clever in an exhausting way, but which my friend Sue forced me to buy. Still, it paid off in that now there are people at work who after seeing me with the book think I enjoy particle physics as a hobby. So there's that.

And my favorite bad book of all time is "The Thorn Birds." 'Nuff said.

Maggie's Book Group 3.0 46 books / 9 members / 19 posts This is the second online incarnation of a real life book group, located in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin, established in April 2003. A couple years back we started a Yahoo group which is great for staying in touch, but not so great for talking about the books we are reading. This seems like a better way to take our book group to the cyber level once and for all. The tricky part now is getting them to join Shelfari....

I LOVE love to read...! 200 books / 257 members / 36 posts

Better than Starbucks… if you like good coffee, great books, sharp wit, and people who read 678 books / 1010 members / 10305 posts Better than Starbucks… if you like good coffee, great books, sharp wit, and people who read Shakespeare, Dickens, Twain, Marquez, Morrison, Joyce, Faulkner, Cather, Kingsolver and a few hundred other really delicious writers, not to impress strangers, but because they love a good read, then please join us. We are not a private group, but the administrators will not resist the urge to delete boring and stupid comments. By the same token, personal attacks on young, slow or otherwise disadvantaged players will not be tolerated. Generally, be nice to other members, but spare not public figures, pop lit superstars, big box stores, politicians and religious leaders. Focus more energy on what is good and even what is great, but feel free to throw a stone when the occasion calls for it. Welcome!

The Winers 41 books / 6 members / 45 posts We don't really wine a lot... do we? This book club was originally formed by co-workers at a South Florida non-profit. Now, the group includes friends and family from the tri-county area AND BEYOND! We are very amenable to reading from a variety of genres and some of us actually finished Anna Karenina! Show offs! Actually, we all just love reading and a great writer/storyteller. The group is more social than serious, but we are all really nice, well-intended readers who like to talk about what we love in a book.
