The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane is a Civil War novel about a young boy, Henry Fleming who joins the Union Army to fight to preserve the Union. Henry joins the army because of the praise that new recruits were getting. Henry realizes after a few days in the army that he has made a mistake because he is unwilling to fight. One day, Henry's Regiment gets orders to march to a battle. Henry is frighted and starts to plan ways to escape. As soon as the battle begins the Union army along with Henry were surrounded by Confederates and Henry knew that he had to fight for his life and the Union army become victors. Shortly after the battle Henry sees more Confederates coming and he decides to run away believing that he would die if he stayed. While running away he heard Union troops celebrating the victory that Henry thought was impossible. Henry realizes that he has to make up for his cowardice and decides to fight.
I thought that his book was a great read. I enjoyed the plot and thought that the ending was very creative. The only thing that I hated about this book was the author's writing style. Some of the words were written in southerner accents and it was sometimes impossible to understand.

This book takes place over a few days of an American civil war battle, and you the reader get to hear the thoughts of the "youth," a young man facing combat for the first time. While he goes from over confident bravado to deserter and then to a charging fanatic, you hear his thoughts, fears and rationalizations. A great story of coming of age and facing fears both real and imagined.

I always try to read a few of the classics each year. This one I found to be difficult. It took me almost three weeks to finish the last two chapters.
It was not that the language was hard to understand, as I read it was like pulling teeth. There was nothing interesting about any of the characters, and the main character's point-of-view kept changing, which made reading confusing. It reminds me of "The Catcher in the Rye".
Although it got praise in it's day, and it is always on the list of must read in schools around the country, or maybe not, I would deffinitly NOT recommend this as a must read.
