“I've loved Wrede's Dragon series and felt disappointed that most of what she's written since is less accessible to teens and certainly not of interest to adults. This, the first book in a series, is one I can cheer for. Reminds me of Orson Scott Card's Seventh Son -- Lan is the seventh son of a seventh son in an alternate history of the United States, but Eff, his twin is the primary character. She as a thirteenth child and as such an opposite fortune is predicted. But predictions don't always come true. Interesting setting in an American Old West where magicians like Eff and Lan's father (a seventh son) shelter the settlers from wooly mammoths and steam dragons.”

The role of women was another subtle element throughout. The voice is authentic and natural.
This stands out to me as a unique concept and a group of individuals who are well-rounded and realistic.”
“very interesting eff the unlucky thirteenth child finds that just like her brother she has powers of her own that may or may not help her family so when her brother is tutored in magic she spends the afternoons learning all the different kinds if magic with her friend and her wonderful exotic teacher. but when her brother is in trouble she comes to rescue him.”

The main character, Eff, is the 13th child in the family, which is considered very bad in magical lore. On the other hand, her twin brother is the seventh son of a seventh son and much admired. Her parents move them to the frontier, in part of protect Eff from the superstitions about her status that are causing her to be the blunt of much abuse. I loved this book - reminds me a little of Harry Potter.”
