“Her historical detail is amazing on subjects as diverse as dyeing cloth, the politics of the pope, shipping and commerce, etc.
The threads of the story line, from the 1st book through the 8th, are impeccably complex - almost too much so at times for me! But very dynamic and thoroughly enjoyable to read.”
“At long last most of Nicholas's problems are solved. He's reunited with his wife, he has expiated his "crime" that we heard about at end To Lie With Lions, his friends have all taken him back into their hearts. And he has become a trusted adviser to the Scottish Royals whilst Gelis runs his business with the help of John le Grant. Widowed Adorne is now permanently in Scotland and has a new lady.
But as alway, Dunnett will not allow her hero to have it all his own way. Awkward rumours arise, fanned by vindictive Henry. Problems and tragedies hit Nicholas and two of his closest friends. Whilst the finale is heart-warming, with hints of the future, there are so many bitter-sweet as well as plain bitter memories too.”
