Julie said: My Father's Dragon, Elmer and the Dragon, and The Dragons of Blueland by Ruth Stiles Gannett. These books are narrated by a boy who is telling of his father's adventures in rescuing a dragon and the further adventures they have afterward. In the first book, Elmer Elevator must journey through a jungle and pass many wiley animals in order to save a dragon who has been being held captive on Wild Island. In the second book, Elmer wants to go home and the dragon decides to fly him there. They get stuck on an island where canaries are dying of curiosity. In the third, Dragon discovers that his family have been taken as prisoners to sell to zoos. He must find Elmer without letting any humans know he exists in order to find and save them. These books are so creative, cute, and truly kid-friendly--they were written in the 40's and I'd never heard of them until I stumbled upon them at Borders. I really think they should have as much popularity as other childhood fantasy stories like The Wizard of Oz and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I have no idea why they don't.

When I fist became a librarian, this was my FAVORITE book to read aloud to 3rd graders. There was one class that always had trouble settling down--but NOT during this book!! they got ready to listen quickly, so they could find out what happened next!! AR said it was 6th grade reading level--but it is an easy read!!

I learned about this book from a very good friend. She is also a teacher. She told me that she had read this book with her 1st grade students. I was a 2nd grade teacher then, so I continued the series with my students. We loved all three books! Now, it's even made as one book, a trilogy.

I have to admit, that of all the books I taught to squirming third graders, this was my least favorite. BUT the children always loved this tale of a young boy who runs away to rescue a captured dragon. It's silly & odd & the illustrations suit it perfectly.
