Lauren Greenfield is an incredible photographer, a remarkable combination of a brilliant documentarian and cultural commentator. Her book, 'Girl Culture', included a variety of photographs which highlight the compromised nature of young female beauty and sexuality in a culture which simultaneously demeans and fetishizes it. 'Thin' seems like a natural extension of 'Girl Culture'. It's beautiful, grotesque, upsetting, fascinating and many more things I don't have the words to describe. Greenfield spent six months at a residential rehab facility for women suffering from a variety of eating disorders. She took pictures, she got to know the women living there, she collected various materials to include in this book. Presented here are not only her shockingly beautiful and startling photographs but also pictures from the subjects' widely varied childhoods and journal entries from their time in rehab. The book seems at once sharply focused and broadly relevant; it is a truly amazing and affecting accomplishment. Also, on a sad note, one of the five girls that constitute the primary focus of 'Thin', Polly, committed suicide a few weeks ago.

This was a good book, better than the movie that was on HBO and youtube.com. It went behind the scenes of the movie and let us hear the voices of the women in the movie more than they were able to let their voices be heard when they were in treatment. This is one of my favorites.
