The heroine didn't inspire any kind of sympathy. Caitlin wated it to look tough, but she only succeeded at making me stay away from her.

When Pete Caldecott was sixteen years old, she and wild, bad boy Jack Winter conjured up an evil spirit by accident. Jack is a mage. The spirit was after Pete. Jack saved Pete but be doing so he sacrificed himself.

Pete has tried to put those moments behind her and has done a pretty good job so far. She is now a Detective Inspector for the Scotland Yard. Children have gone missing. It is up to Pete to figure out what has happened to the children. There is only one person that Pete can trust to help her find the missing children…it is Jack. Pete thought Jack perished twelve years ago but he survived somehow…barely. Jack might as well have perished. It is no good to Pete in his current condition. He is a strung out heroin junkie. Pete and Jack will once again face evil and there is no turning back.

Street Magic is the brand new book in the Black London series. Urban fantasy is alive and well, thanks to authors like Caitlin Kittredge. I have never read any of the books in the Nocturne City series. After reading this book, I plan to check out all of them. Pete is one tough cookie. She put Jack in his place move times than I could count. Don’t feel back as Jack could hold his own. He is the sexiest mage that I have ever come across. He has this bad boy image that is every woman’s ultimate fantasy. These two make a good team. I can’t wait the next book, Demon Bound to be released.

Pete and Jack make a reluctant team at first. They work well together, but there's a lot of head-butting and dislike from the past they shared. Pete would be a good friend to have, if only to be at your side in a fight. She rocks and kicks serious ass. Jack has his charm, in a rough and tumble kind of way. He is a powerful mage and there are some people from the Black, the realm of the fey in London, who would like to see him dead.
Caitlin should write a horror novel one day. There are some scenes throughout the book that made my skin crawl.
There are no light moments in this book. It's dark, moody and superb. I read it as my bedside book and it completely took over my dreams. Holy schmokes, what dreams. I read it quickly, so the dreams were only for a few nights.
    Five dark moody beans......

A cross between Hellblazer and Simon Green's Nightside, this book is a good introduction to a pretty dark world. I don't know where the series is going, but it's probably worth watching.

I thought this was pretty good. Jack and Pete were great. I felt a connection with them both, and I can't wait until Demon Bound. However, I thought Kittredge could have done a better job at explaining some things. It felt like a lot of the action scenes weren't fleshed out.

It reminds me of the Constantine comic books, done in book form, with a female constant protagonist. Even the cover looks like Constantine!

    A Blurb:

Pete Caldecott has a dark past, a past that she has vowed to keep buried in the darkest depths of her memories, but her nightmares are getting worse making it difficult to sleep. Pete is a detective and her current case is finding children that are disappearing. When she receives a request from an informant to meet him, alone, she is shocked to find out that it's Jack Winter, a huge part of that dark past that she thought was dead and gone. The once punk rocker who mesmerized her when she was 16 is there in the flesh and strung out on heroin. He might be screwed up, but his tip leads her directly to the missing girl. When more children go missing, she finds herself going back to Jack for help. They will have to face some dark powers that may very well get them both killed, but Pete knows that working with Jack is the only way to save the kids (and themselve) before it's too late.

    The Review:

Pete Caldecott, our heroine, is tough as nails, but not in an overly done annoying way. She can stick up for herself, and isn't the type that needs rescuing, nor does she want it. Jack Winter, the hero, is rough around the edges and extremely powerful. The two have great chemistry and the tension between them could bring grown men to their knees. Fans will love this new duo, and will be left sitting on the edge of their seats waiting for more. Street Magic is a gritty, dark, and thrilling addition to the Urban Fantasy genre. Being based in London gives the book a gloomy feel with it's foggy streets and shadows lurking in every corner. Kittredge not only has a way with words, but a way with worlds. She's a master at creating new and edgy places for her characters to dwell in. Making both of her series a pleasure to read. For Street Magic , she does a terrific job of using British slang without overdoing it, and this makes the book even more enjoyable. You'll probably have learned a few new words for daily use after reading
    this one!

So how about it? Get your sodding arses out to the bookstore and pick this one up! :)
