I found this a page-turner, while not action-packed it's full of enough intrigue and romance and character dilemmas to keep reading just to see how things turn out for everyone, with an interesting twist at the end. Several characters from Swordspoint make cameo appearances, much older since this book is set several decades later.

I enjoyed the academic politicking, not many fantasy/alternative history novels I've read set themselves in a university. Subtle Arthurian reworking...

I really liked Kushner's Swords of Riverside books, but I didn't like this one as much. It's as richly layered and evocative of an era and all that, but the story confused me—perhaps it was too metaphorical, I don't know. It seemed to be about history literally repeating itself. Apparently, back in history, the king was quite literally linked to the land by blood, through wizards, or advisors or something.
