I thought that the translator, in his criticism, pointlessly faults the epic on several counts. However, the translation and much of the criticism in the back section is great. It's interesting to compare this story with the more northerly versions of it, which are less Christian and courtly, much more sparing in terms of descriptive detail, and show the story's women in a different light.
