“mostly great”

Yes | No“This was a bit of a disappointment because I loved his book THE MASTER which was a fictionalized bio of Henry James. This was a group of 9 stories, most dealing with rather different mother/son relationships. Most of these mothers don't fit the standard definition. I didn't find anything that held my interest and fascination as did the earlier book.
His character studies are quite sharp and the writing is wonderful. Most are set in Ireland but the last and longest is in Spain. ”
“Some horrifying, some sad, some hilarious, all nicely crafted and compelling. One of those collections where you finish a story and immediately begin a new one.
The last story needs to be made into a film. The first story will give you the full time creeps for days.”
“Went from "sipping" to gulping, finally. Beautifully written. After "The Master," I didn't know that Toibin could equal that achievement. He doesn't disappoint and demonstrates incredible skill in these stories. Mother/son theme is at the heart of each, but each is unique, each character with a distinct voice. I highly recommend this collection. ”
