  “While I didn't dislike this book and was able to appreciate the well-crafted, nuanced writing, I felt that there was a certain remoteness to the characters and a lack of immediacy in the plot. Despite the flaws of Duran's first book, The Duke of Shadows, I still prefer it to this second effort. This one may be more technically proficient, but it lacks the emotional intensity that made Shadows so memorable.”
