He wrote in that brief moment when everything could be said; his use of cork dialect & minstrel jokes would now keep him mostly unpublished (we are now a people who are troubled by the vocabulary of Huckleberry Finn rather than its truths, & Berryman would be hit with the same stick.) He’s radically uneven. But he can break my heart like very few writers
