“When I first read this book I loved it and was swept away by the talent of her writing, and also accepted the beliefs about female circumcision portrayed in the novel. But then I visited West Africa and spoke with some African women about their feelings towards non-African views of their lives. Many African woman scholars are offended by Walker's portrayal of female circumcision and the quality of life in general presented in the book and other forms of American media. I felt very humbled by this, and realized that there is probably some unintended arrogance in the attitude present in Walker's book, and in my own reaction to these types of practices. In general what is portrayed about Africa in books and other types of media is mostly negative. Very little effort is made to understand and show the progressive, positive elements of African life in all types of media. Right or wrong, the practice of female circumcision in any country is very complex, and should be treated by an outsider as a very sensitive issue. I came back from my trip convinced that instead of learning something new I had unlearned some preconceived notions of my own.”
