This book starts out great, but I'm not fond of the ending. Then again, maybe I was just tired of reading by time I got to the end.

I recently visited Niagara Falls for the fist time and was as mesmerized as many of the characters in this story, which spans much of the mid-20th century. One family is featured in mesmerizing psychological detail; its glory days, its downfall, and its eventual redemption. Crooked cops, city officials, and lawyers abound ... and there are a few ethical heroes who manage to hold to their consciences through scandals, a murder that isn't revealed as such until more than 20 years after the fact. The story is a saga, and written with meticulous details about the city, the Falls, the Love Canal scandal, and the overarching influence of corrupt politicians, lawyers, City officals ... A brilliantly written story; not to be missed.

I'm a Joyce Carol Oates fan, and I love this story. It has a great tragic begining and it introduced me to the Niagra Falls/Love Canal catastrophy.

Good book to read, slow at times. The story does come full circle

I thought this book was very good except for one totally unnecessary graphic sexual scene which had no real bearing on the outcome of the tale. Other than that, I was intrigued by the story and it led me to want to read some more about the social issue of big business poisoning through pollutants and Love Canal in particular.

The magnetism of the falls kept me glued to this book. Good reading, the story of a woman whose destiny was shaped by the falls. Every character was believable and so well developed. I really liked this book, and I think it was a book club selection! Miracle!

Living near the Niagara Falls area, I enjoyed the setting and the history of Love Canal, having lived through it. Joyce Carol Oates is a gifted writer, but I have to say she is difficult to plod through at times. I was disappointed in the ending. Not for everyone.

This is a story of a young woman whose honeymoon turns disastrous when her husband throws himself over the falls. She then marries a pillar of the community and her life turns into a seemingly perfect existence. Tragedy eventually takes over. This is a haunting exploration of an American family in crisis.
