Oates' collection of short stories explores the dark and gruesome aspect of the female pysche. From an innocent six year old jealous of her baby brother, to a 70 year old killer remorseful on her death bed, Oates' female protagonists never faulter in conveying a feeling of utter grisliness. Beware the female species!

Although not such a huge short story fan, this collection definetly did manage to hold my interest until the end.

Some tales I could relate to, others were very disturbing. This book examines the ugly side of woman when they are pushed to the brink of their inner fears. It makes you think how far women could go if their imaginations allowed the courage.
