Joyce Carol Oates is such an impressive writer, as can be seen in this hefty collection of short stories. While there were a few pieces that I didn't enjoy so much (but then again, I'm not sure "enjoy" is the appropriate word), most of the stories are marked by a keen observation of human tragedy and the psychology of loss.

It was a tad depressing to read the whole book straight though, because the stories delve into the darker side of the human mind and nature. Some of the pieces...
