Alexa Daley is twelve years old and a very curious girl. She loves spending the summer in Bridewell with her father. She often tries to find ways to the other side of the wall so she can explore the land beyond. One day Alexa discovers the founder of the cities and the builder of the wall left many clues behind that help her go to the other side of the wall where she finds a glowing green rock. This gives her the ability to talk to animals and while doing so, finds out a terrible secret. The convicts who helped build the wall are rising and getting ready to strike the town of Bridewell and take over. Alexa must get the high officials to listen to her before it is too late and find a spy hidden among the people of Bridewell, named Sabastian.

  • Alexa Daley: 12 years old and as the main character in the story, Alexa is revealed as a curious and adventurous child. She is the daughter of a mayor. She doesn't have friends her age and spends time with older people in the cities.
  • Pervis Kotcher: Captain of the town watch. Always keeping an eye on Alexa. Described as bitter and mean.
  • Grayson: Keeper of the library in Bridewell. A portly man who always finds time to sneak into the kitchens for a bite to eat. He is a friend to Alexa and will chat with her when he isn't repairing old books. Adores strawberry jam.
  • Murphy: A loyal and energetic little squirrel, Murphy becomes Alexa Daley's furry little friend and devoted dare devil.
  • Darius: A wolf that was separated from his family when the walls between the cities were built.
  • Sebastian: Main antagonist of the story. He is someone living in Bridewell who wants to see it taken over. He uses 'Sebastian' as a pseudonym, so no one knows who he really is.
  • Ganesh: Works with the mayor, Alexa's father.
  • Warvold: Founder of the cities and designer of the system of walls that protects all of the cities.
  • Yipes: A man living outside the walled cities. He is very short and speaks in a high voice. He can communicate with animals.
  • Renny: Wife of Warvold. She isn't alive in the story at all but she is the cause of much of what happens. Great artist of gems.
  • Nicholas: 25 year old son of Renny and Warvold.
  • Silas: The mail carrier between towns. Drives a cart down.
  • Ander: Great king of the forest
  • Sherwin and Odessa: Son and wife of Darius, the wolf. Separated from him by the wall.
