Didn’t Like It“From the author of "Jesus' Son" - a book I really enjoyed - and the National Book Award-winning "Tree of Smoke" comes this ponderous piece of fluff. Obviously, Johnson's been reading his Elmore Leonard, and I guess figured he could do Dutch one better. Man, was he wrong! There's nothing...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“The book thought it was better than it was. It started off strong, but quickly became formulaic. I was slightly disappointed. It was a short read, but not the best.
Book 47 for the year. The last three could be hard.”

Quick and clever noir about two down on their luck losers and the violence that follows them as they try to hustle each other. I really enjoyed this but it is definitely for those hard crime novel afficiandos. This is from the writer of Smoke in the Trees about the Vietnam War. However, it is a real turnabout for him at a terse 195 pages and in the style of dashiell and hammett. Enjoy.

It feels as if Mr. Johnson took a look at Cormac McCarthy's No Country For Old Men and said "Hey I can do that.". The quickest of his reads, Nobody Move is a taut crime novel, peopled with his usual trainwrecks speaking poetically about doing unspeakable things. He holds himself back a bit and writes sparely, once again akin to NCFOM. It breaks to the point fast without any meandering the author is sometimes known for (a la Tree of Smoke), though the threads of the story are tattered by the end. Not as satisfying as some of his others that are near and dear to me, but still flying high above the rest of the literary pack.”

I read it quickly because I liked its characters and its unpredictability. It reminded me of a kind of Elmore Leonard meets Cormac McCarthy crime novel. It has just a twinge of existentialism in its randomness and chance to make it utterly realistic. ”

Obviously, Johnson's been reading his Elmore Leonard, and I guess figured he could do Dutch one better. Man, was he wrong! There's nothing remotely interesting or captivating about this story - the characters are either undefined or grossly exaggerated caricatures of TV villains, the action is bland, and there isn't even an ending with any real closure. What a waste of my time - hopefully not yours, as well. (Read 7/09)
