She travels the world and paints the portraits of royalty and nobles. In Russia she meets with personal tragedy and escapes to her birthplace, Scotland, to heal - where she meets the Earl of Linnet.
- Robert McDermott, Earl of Linnett: Hero - indeterminate age - I would guess mid thirties. Brilliant orator and politician - leaves to visit France with his wife and child - where tragedy strikes. He returns home three years later to try and put the ghosts behind him - and learns that he has a new neighbor - Margaret Dalrousie.
