I made the mistake of judging this book after a quick glance at the cover and thought it would be about President Lincoln. It is not. It tells the story of a young man who joins the Union Army duriing the American Civil War and accepts missions given to him by the Union Secret Service. Later he must deal with his guilt, as he has affected many lives and struggles to atone. The story rolls along quickly, with many twists and surprises, until the very last page. I highly recommend it and am eager to read more by Dara Horn.”

This book has everything in it from romance to intrigue and mystery, action, and solid civil war facts about the involvement of Jews in the Civil War. The author's notes at the end are also very interesting.
The reason this book is not getting 4 stars from me (I give it more 3.5 stars) is because while well written and definitely interesting, the main character felt somewhat detached and overall, was not a likeable character. That's not to say those things make a great book - just that the book could have benefited more I think by making him more human. The author touched some on his conflict from doing his duties, but I really didn't feel a struggle from him. It's hard to explain, but the book is a worthwhile and interesting read.”
“Interesting historical novel. Made me concious of the wide spread involvement in the war and the deep beliefs so many people held. It seems no one was neutral.

“A different view of the civil war -- even though it's historical fiction”

One of the opening scenes is of a Passover seder celebrating the liberation of Jews from bondage in Egypt being served by black slaves. And although I certainly know more now than I did before about Jews in the Civil War, what I really took from this book was just a good, well-told story.”
