I finally decided to read this book after I found out it was connected to Ted Dekker's Circle Trilogy and the Lost Books of History. It's a good read if you've read those, altough the end is the best part. The beginning is a bit slow, and some scenes are too disgusting for my taste. So, read it if you love the whole Circle Trilogy/Books of History thing, otherwise skipable.

A small, isolated town and a monastery hidden in the mountains in Colorado are the settings for this suspenseful religious thriller. A number of orphans from all over the world have been taken to the monastery and are being raised, isolated from all societal influences, as part of a theological experiment into the nature of good and evil. However, the story of these philosophical geniuses is somewhat sophomoric in delivery, reminiscent of a Disney-styled Boys from Brazil. The havoc these children cause on the nearby town demonstrates more about what self-indulged children can do than it demonstrates the nature of good and evil in humanity.

There is some interesting stuff here but the climax is just so ridiculously silly. If you are going to go to the trouble of writing a book at least write and ending that doesn't have such a simplistic and blatant agenda as well as being just not all that creative. It's contrived novel writing at best.

The last fourth of this book makes it all worth it. Everything came together and I finally got into it. Classic Dekker--a little weird, a little spiritual...but the English teacher in me liked the fictional character come to life idea... A quick read.

This book FREAKED ME OUT! I read it while I was camping and could not stop thinking about it...I still think about it. Quiet the thriller! A scary religious novel.

This was a very good page-turner. It ties in loosely with both the Circle Trilogy and the Lost Books series. I was happy to see the return of the Christian allegories that were present in the Circle Trilogy. Definitely adding this to my shelf of favorites.

This was my first Ted dekker book and i finished it in one sitting. Ted knows how to keep you turning the pages and at the same time, teach you, and remind you of what kind of person you are supposed to be. GREAT BOOK!!
