“The protagonist of this book, Moirin, seems to be modeled after Carey's very successful character Phedre, but her story lacks a ring of authenticity and she lacks Phedre's strong will. The book begins slowly, picks up with Moirin's introduction to D'Angeline society, but becomes confusing when Moirin travels thousands of miles to Ch'in to save a boring, unlikeable princess--for no apparent reason.
In the Kushiel series, Phedre risked herself to save her country and her family. In Naamah's Kiss, Moirin risks herself to become involved in a war that she is not rightly a part of, without qualms or contemplation. It didn't ring true to me. On the whole, that part of the story felt misplaced and anticlimactic.
I think the main problem with this book is that the conflicts and dangers in it didn't feel urgent. Moirin chooses them, and can choose at any time to leave. As I read I became more and more frustrated with her passiveness, and with the senselessness of the plot.
I'll likely read the next book in the series, because I love the universe. But as far as I can tell, this series won't compare at all to Kushiel.”
“I find that I like her female protags more compelling than the male. I like her worldbuilding quite a bit. ”

I loved watching Phedre grow from horny curious teenager to respected Hero of the Realm and seeing Imriel go from frightened boy to mature young man. Moirin's journey is about love and destiny and while the other two trilogies featured those arcs as well, there's just something very romantic and unpolitical about this one. I really identified with the character more which I think made me fall in love with it even more. I certainly can't wait to see where Moirin goes! ”

I would like to see another story with this character but with a better story line that explores different parts of her world.”

Cannot wait for the next book!”

Plus, she pushed the timeline forward four generations, which helped make the universe fresh again, while still being recognizable. Amazing book!”
