“An easy read. Interesting story of women's place in society in 1800's England. Lilly is the daughter of an Apothecary and grew up working in her father's shop. However, she is not allowed to prescribe or administer treatments, but needs to do so to save her father's shop while he's ill. She is expected to go to London and come out to society, form a suitable marriage. Will she be able to marry for love? The many male suitors keep you guessing who will prevail right up until the end.”

I enjoyed the fact that there were so many subplots to keep my attention. And I loved that the author had me guessing for a good portion of the book in regards to the young woman's future.
The title of this book fits the story perfectly. It has a bittersweet meaning that only someone who is really "into" the story would understand. I almost felt like I was watching a movie play out on the big screen because the details were so vivid. Some were so vivid, in fact, that they made me shudder. It was a bad idea for me to read that leaching scene right before I went to bed. You can imagine why.
I didn't envy the decisions the heroine needed to make. I also found the peculiarities regarding her brother's behavior intriguing. Since I have clients with similar diagnoses, I thought the author did a great job portraying the particulars of someone with his limited abilities. It was good to see an accurate portrayal of two people with special needs that were not immediately tucked away in asylums as was the trend back in that era. Fans of Regency romances should really enjoy this book.

“Simply put. I loved it. I expected to enjoy it but to gobble all 400 pages in three days? No, not really.
The characters are fantastic and the plot line moves so well I was left breathless. I love how you're a kept guessing on whom of Lilly's suitors will win her heart and I was very much pleased on the outcome.
I look forward to reading Klassen's other book "Lady at Milkweed Manor" I doubt I will be dissapointed.

For Historical Fiction, it was a quick and easy read. But that does not mean it wasn't well written. There was a very nice flow to it. I enjoyed the characters and settings. There was drama, and although no major mystery, there was some intrigue as well. I found the life of the Apothecary very interesting, and learned a lot about the field that I never knew, as well as that of Doctors and Surgeons in the 1800's. Although I guessed who the love interest would eventually be, there are several men that she was interested in, so you get to wonder which was her love life will lead her. I now want to read her first novel. I think this is a great novel for someone who doesn't usually read Historical Fiction. ”
