Didn’t Like It1 of 1 members found this review helpful“I've only recently become interested in science fiction, and I find it particularly fun to read the "classics" like Clark and Heinlein because of the way these they end up imagining what their future, our present, will be like. I'd been aware of Phillip K. Dick for a while, but just now got...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“This is an alternate history/science fiction book. In it, the Germans and Japanese have won World War II and are now ruling most of the world, including the United States. There is a book circulating in the U.S. that supposes the Germans lost the war.
The premise sounded interesting, but I mostly found it boring and I just wanted to get through it so I could move on to another book. Bits and pieces sort of started off interesting, but somehow those bits and pieces just didn’t hold my interest for long.

“Awesome book. I've read it at least three times. What would have happened if Germany and Japan won WWII? That's just the beginning...”

What would the world have been like in 1962 if the Nazis and Japanese had won WWII? This is the surface story for The Man in the High Castle. I say "surface story" because the book is about so much more than that: questioning reality, personal surrender, and a lot of other stuff I couldn't figure out. My favorite part of the book is that one of the sub-plots is about an author (the title character) who writes a book about what would have happened if the Allies had won the war. In effect, this makes Dick himself the "Man in the High Castle". The ending features a lengthy interview of this fictional author which, if you can figure it out, will give you insight to the real author's intent.
Fascinating book. Wish I understood it better.”

“One of the essential works of alternate history written to date. Dick describes a world were the Second World War was won by the Nazis. "The Man in the High Castle" deals with the political, cultural and social impact of this event on the lives of everyday people. The story contains no real heroes, nor villains (apart from the fascist totalitarian regime, of course), which is a good thing in this case. Dick wouldn't be Dick if there weren't also any characteristic philosophical themes in this novel. Wholeheartedly recommended.”

It's supposed to be a classic, the idea being the Nazis win WWII, Fair Do's except that the ideas they portray are far fetched and the book goes so far as to reference itself in some bizarre alternate book in which the allies win WWII..
If I'm honest I only managed half the book, in which our reality of the situation was referenced far too often in this odd alternate book. In the end it was the writing style i hated”
“ This book was one of the first to deal with a subject that science fiction has since beaten to death, what if the axis had won world was II? Dick's work still seems fresh after countless imitations and he isn't just interested in the subject for it's sensationalistic elements. i wasn't sure where this book was going the whole time and once it got there I was left breathless. ”

A fun trip through perspective and an interesting story. The plot is sometimes slow going, but the novelty of the novel keeps the rating higher.”
