I need more than five stars to rate this absolutely engrossing book. It's the best thing I've picked up since "Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society," and one that will stay with me in the same way. Every character has become someone important to me and the book has opened a window into...

Title: Couldn't Get Out of the Blocks...

While I am a fan of novels with Southern settings, I opted to quickly skim this book after Chapter 1 -- a true rarity for me, especially considering that this is a Vine Voice book I am obligated to review. Perhaps my expectations were too high...

Written by a woman from Mississippi, she has an intimate understanding of the history of racial discrimination in the south. Her characters are well drawn and believable. The story line is interesting but could move along a bit faster for me. All in all, I recommend this book highy.

Excellent. I know it's fiction, but it opened my eyes to a lot. What a great book. I would recommend it to anyone.

I enjoyed this title, but didn't love it as much as my coworkers at work. The Help centers on the women of Mississippi, particularly the privileged white women and their black maids during the 1960s. All the book has an original plot, I just wished the author would have taken a closer look at the racial tensions between the characters. The book is told from three different perspectives, which is neat, but the minor characters aren't not flushed out too well. Still a good read and would be a good pick for an adult bookclub.
