The author is a former Mormon, and I wondered how much of the pain of her own loss of faith is reflected in the struggles of the various characters. Their sincerity is sympathetically portrayed. She manages to convey both present and historical information about the religion in a way that is highly relevant to the plot and doesn’t feel like a text-book.”
