The novel begins with what looks to be a straight forward simple meeting with an old acquaintance, who for reasons untold wants to meet up with Joel, on the pretext of discussing a merger to take place, the reason for their being in Geneva, the place marking the start.
It turns out to be a far more important meeting than Joel, thought it would be, for he gets manipulated by his acquaint, Halliday into taking up a mission to compile evidence against the generals of the most dangerous group ever to be formed, Aquitaine.
His journey begins with his former friend, Halliday dying in his arms, as he starts seeing the various faces of the aquitaine and the powers they hold. He plans his way into meeting one of the generals by manipulating one of his friend, who falls for him and the meeting takes place. But it turns out that the the general puts a watch on him and he gets forced to escape, injuring his trail.
Very soon he becomes wanted all over Europe for killings not done by him, again done by the aquitaine named upon him. Both hunter and hunted, he is termed a psychotic killer, a killer on the loose. He finds himself running from the forces of evil, as in the years, when he escaped from Vietnam.
He finds out his former wife coming to his aide, and as the assassinations continue, they fight their way back against the generals.
The plot further takes a twist when Joel gets the three generals kidnapped and manipulates them into speaking his way. The story just doesnt seem to find a straight path and keeps taking a turn every now and then.
The ultimate twist brought in when the fifth genreral happens to be one of the key persons, in the least suspected to be in the aquitaine.
A team is sent to the place of the base of aquitaine and they fight their way into it as the conspiracy begins to take its toll, voilence erupting in all places. With the whole list of the aquitiane taken, the people behind voilence are soon captured and the violence coming to an end, thus stopping the aquitaine progression.
