Yes | No“I usually dont go for books that are written by a different author than the one that created the series but i made an exception for this one due to two reasons. One is that the Covert One series is one of my all time favorite and i would not forgive myself if i did not read this book. Second is that Ludlum only co-authored the other books in the series (with different co-authors) so the series has already passed through differnt hands. Suffice to say that i was not disappointed. Cobb was able to follow the feel of the Covert One series although he was able to giv eit his own style. For one, he was able to bring out the nuances and traits of each character. In effect, he was able to give the book another dimension as we get into the heads of the lead characters. Another positive is the new character that he introduced, Valentina Metrace. How can you not love a beautiful, deadly and outspoken historian who also happens to be a weapons expert. Her own brand of humor really lends itself to the story and mixes in well with Jon and Randi. Also, she represents something that i have been waiting for all through out the series, a love interest for Jon. Randi is just as solid as ever, although soem fans may be shocked at what the author did to her (which i cant reveal without playing the role of spoiler). Jon is given a new dimension as a leader. While he has led the missions in all past events, decisions were largely made by Fred Klein, the head of Covert One. The book continually stresses Jon's leadership all throughout while slightly relegating Klein and Adam Castilla to the background. The action is as intense as ever and the need to know what happens next keeps you turning page by page. Id call this book a success for Cobb was able to add his own style without digressing too much from what has been established in the previous 6 books. His writing is much more raw and bold than previous books but is also slightly more entertaining and witty, thanks in large part to the new character, Valentina. The ending hints more obviously at a follow on book to this one, which i will eagerly await. As a fan of the Covert One series, I thank James Cobb for successfully continuing the magnificent series created by the great Robert Ludlum ”
