  “Captain John Staple, a gentleman of modest means, having left the army, is being set up by his mother and sister with vapid, young heiresses. He then takes off on one of his strange starts. At a lonely toll-gate John feels something is amiss, so takes over the booth as he investigates. He meets the lady of the area, Miss Nell, and the mystery enmeshes her as well. To save and win Nell, John must solve the mystery.”
