“Fun summer read in the light Nantucket series. Not one of the best in the series, but enjoyable.”Swanem wrote this review Sunday, July 14, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“The story begins with the death of Tess and Greg, one of the couples in a group of 8 friends. The story follows each character as he/she attempts to deal with the death. The Chief, Ed, is told the news by Addison. Addison is grief-stricken as he was involved in an affair with Tess. His wife, Phoebe, is upset at the loss of her friends despite knowing about the affair. Her drug-induced stupor helps in dealing with the pain of both difficulties. Ed's wife, Andrea, finds the bear unbearable despite the fact that she is now the caregiver of the deceased couple's 2 young children. Tess was Andrea's cousin and best friend. Despite Andrea's state she is completely unwillingly to allow Delilah to keep the children even though she also has 2 small children who are quite attached to the Tess and Greg's children. This causes a rift in the two women's friendship. Delilah's grief comes from the loss of Greg, someone with whom an affair may have occurred, but their friendship was more important to her, so she kept him at bay. Delilah's husband, Jeffrey, had been involved with Andrea prior to meeting Delilah. In Andrea's grief-stricken state, she runs to Jeffrey for comfort in the memories they both have of Tess. The Chief, while upset, still must do his job and discover what truly happened to cause the deaths.
The story resolves with everyone finally coming to terms with the loss and finding him/herself once again.
Phoebe dedicating a nature trail to the lost friends. She also, returns to event planning and overcomes her reliance on drugs (due to the heart-wrenching loss of her twin brother on Sept 11 which also resulted in her miscarriage.) Addison and she renew their love for one another and finally conceive a child.
Although Delilah made an attempt to run away with her own children as well as Greg and Tess's, she and Jeffrey as well as Andrea mend their broken relationships.
The Chief discovers the most likely cause of death through a teenage student of Greg's with whom he reportedly had an affair. As it turned out, the night prior to the death, he told the girl that he was in love with his wife and wanted ot make it work with her. Their death occurred the following day, their anniversary, as they attempted sailing during rough seas. Tess had taken a drug from Phoebe and had been drinking champagne. She was deathly afraid of the water due to an almost-drowning as a child. The Chief imagined that Tess may have fallen in the water and Greg attempted to save her and became entangled in rope and drowned as well. A compelling love story times 4 and even more if you add in the love of friendship. ”

“The Castaways are four couples that are a tight group of friends. When one couple dies everyone deals with it in his/her own way. Each person has secrets about the people that died. Hildenbrand does a wonderful job creating her characters. She's quickly becoming one of my favorite authors!”Melissa P wrote this review Thursday, December 20, 2012. “This is the 5th Hilderbrand book I have read in the past month (I am a sucker for a juicy beach read in the middle of winter!) and it was the most complex with characters and secrets. I almost had to draw a diagram to remember who belonged with whom and who secretly loved whom but it was a good story about the friendship of 4 couples and the reminder is that everything is not always as it seems.”Jen M wrote this review Sunday, December 16, 2012. “The mystery! The secrets! How and why did Greg and Tess die. Was it an accident? Was it murder? Did they fall over the side of the boat or was someone else there?? If the author had used my ending I would have given it 5 stars. ”Arlene C wrote this review Saturday, November 24, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No

“Another great beach read from a favorite author. Though this storyline was depressing, the book didn't depress me. It was mostly about realistic humans, the mistakes they make, how they recover, and how they celebrate their lives given their circumstances. ”delmargal wrote this review Friday, September 7, 2012.
