This was sent to me by my friend at the used bookstore. I think she'd sent it because I really enjoyed "Through a Crimson Veil", O'Shea's entry for the Crimson City series. I have to admit, I wasn't too sure about this one; when I picked it up and read the back cover, I just wasn't grabbed by the plot line. At all.

Well, they tell you not to judge a book by it's cover, don't they? Good reason for that old adage - it's true! This was definitely a good read, and I would gladly recommend it to others who aren't looking for traditional romance novels. This falls under the category of "futuristic romance", but it probably could've been placed under paranormal romance just as easily. In any case, it has a strong plot, good character development, and a decently-paced romance, elements that come together to create a fabulous little book.

Captain Kendall Thomas is cataloging archaeological finds on Jarved 9 for the army. In her daily work, she discovers that someone has been stealing artifacts and smuggling them off the planet. She knows she needs to protect the heritage of this planet, and particularly that of the great pyramid, a structure to which she feels a strange affinity. However, she's not sure she's got enough proof to go to her boss, not yet.

Her good friend Wyatt Montgomery knows that something is wrong, something big. But Bug (his pet name for her) is skittish as the best of times, and Wyatt knows that no amount of pushing is going to get her to open up. Before going on a three-week mission for Special Ops, he asks a friend of his to watch out for her. Unfortunately, this friend is put at risk, and is killed upon Wyatt's return. Adding to the mystery is the disappearance of Kendall, something that is very troubling to Wyatt. He goes to rescue her, and they are both trapped and left for dead in the pyramid.

Sounds simple enough, right? Find a way out of the pyramid, alert the authorities to the smuggling operation, get the girl. As an added twist, Wyatt remembers a past life with Kendall, a life lived right there on Jarved 9. However, Kendall doesn't have any memory of it, which means that Wyatt must be very careful in his pursuit of her. Unbeknownst to Wyatt, Kendall has been having some strange dreams, dreams that may just be those past memories. Will she realize that they were in love before? Will she let herself love him now? Will they be able to escape with their lives?

It's a fast-paced finish to find these answers. O'Shea doesn't disappoint, either (other than explaining why he calls her Bug - never did figure that one out!).

ETERNAL NIGHTS is the second story set on Jarved Nine and although it can be read alone, I highly recommend reading Ms. O'Shea's debut novel RAVYN'S FLIGHT for two reasons, first because it was a unique and incredible read, and also because it will give the reader a greater understanding of the background of the planet and the horror faced by the alien civilization that had been the last inhabitants of J Nine. Many of the characters in ETERNAL NIGHTS are familiar which will make the reader feel they are picking up shortly after they left off.

]When one is as captivated by a plot as this reviewer was with RAVYN'S FLIGHT the fear is that a sequel will not live up to the initial thrill. My mind was put at ease immediately as the words on the page pulled me into their grip once more and wouldn't let me go until I had finished the very last one. I read this book in a single day because I simple couldn't put it down and I consider it time well spent. Bravo Ms. O'Shea!

n RAVYN'S FLIGHT we learned that J Nine had once been inhabited by an alien race with unique abilities, but these special gifts had been no match for a serial killer left there by another alien race as punishment for his crimes. Unable to succeed in neutralizing the killer, the inhabitants of J Nine had fled to their home world, leaving a single city as testament to their culture.

Captain Kendall Thomas is a member of the Colonization Assessment Team (CAT) assigned to the documentation of alien artifacts left behind in the "Old City". She has a specific interest in those contained within the Temple pyramid. Lately she has had strange and terrifying dreams of blood and death. She is not sure they mean. Daylight events also have her scared, so scared that she has kept her suspicions to herself, telling no one, not even her best friend, Spec Ops Captain Wyatt Montgomery

Wyatt is assigned to the security force on the planet. He is well aware that something is spooking Kendall. He is aware of something else as well. He and Kendall are soul mates, having lived and loved in another life among the alien inhabitants of J Nine. He has full memory of their former existence, which had ended badly. Having found his beloved again he isn't about to let her go this time, but she has no recall of having known him in a past life. She values his friendship but every time he attempts to take their relationship to another level she takes a step back. Kendall's upbringing had ingrained in her that relationships fail but friendships last. She has feelings for Wyatt, but she is not willing to risk losing his friendship.

When Wyatt informs Kendall that an assignment will take him outside of the city for a few weeks, she is not quite ready to share her findings, so he assigns a trusted friend to be there for her should matters come to a head while he is gone. Kendall decides to trust the man, but when he is murdered she decides to take the info. to her superior. Kendall had suspected for sometime that someone had been smuggling precious artifacts from the planet, but when Alex Sullivan, a.k.a. "The Big Chill" refused to take the time to hear her out, she takes matters into her own hands.

When Wyatt returns he finds Kendall missing, and last seen hurrying toward the temple. The temple had claimed his love once and Wyatt is not about to let that happen again. Little does he know the dire straights his beloved has gotten herself into.

Now trapped in the labyrinth of the alien temple, Kendall and Wyatt will not only have to dodge a murderous band of smugglers, but also the booby traps laid as security measures by an alien race. Their lives are not the only ones at stake. One last big crime has been planned before a shuttle arrives to take half of the Spec Ops force back to earth in two weeks. The conspirators must complete the theft in time to smuggle all of the artifacts on board.

With innocent lives at stake, will Kendall remember her past connection to the planet in time to save her friends and preserve its history? Will her memories spark her feelings love for her best friend Wyatt, or will he lose her again to a life which had once torn them apart?

J Nine fans will be happy to hear that Ravyn, Brody, Stacey, and Alex are integral to the plot as secondary characters. Kendall and Wyatt are every bit as strong and believable with an incredible chemistry which results in a sexual tension which will keep the romance reader riveted. Patti O'Shea is a unique voice in the genre, and a force to be reckoned with. Like RAVYN'S FLIGHT, ETERNAL NIGHTS is a multifaceted read which will give it broad appeal. I highly recommend it to fans of Futuristic romance and romantic SF, as well as readers of Military and Suspense fiction. The additional aspect of reincarnation will delight paranormal readers as well. This read is a keeper and I hope there will be a return to J Nine in the near future.

Patti O'Shea takes us back to the world of Jarved Nine, a world she created in Ravyn's Flight. Eternal Nights is not a sequel to the first book, though familiar characters do appear and we do get a glimpse into what has been happening in the interval between the first book and this one. [br/][br/]However, Eternal Nights is deeper and more complex than its predecessor. Though I thoroughly enjoyed Ravyn's Flight, I found myself rooting more for the hero of this novel than for any other in a long time. Captain Wyatt "Marsh" Montgomery is a noble, loving, giving, smart, Alpha male who knows what he wants and has the patience to wait for the right time to go after it. But when that time is right, he wastes no time or effort in winning his woman. Captain Kendall "Bug" Thomas is that woman. An intelligent and strong character in her own right, Kendall has very good reasons for wanting to maintain a "friendship only" status with Wyatt. [br/][br/]Kendall finds herself in the middle of a smuggling operation and when Wyatt comes to her aid, he's caught, too. Now the two of them are on the run in the pyramid in the center of the Old City. Wyatt knows they're fated to be together, he just has to convince Kendall of that. Fate seems to be working against him, however, because how can he prove what she means to him while they're trying to get away from those who would do them harm? [br/][br/]Alex "The Big Chill" Sullivan, Stacey, Ravyn and Damon and their charmingly precocious son Cam all make an appearance and have vital roles in Eternal Nights as well. Without them, the story wouldn't be nearly as climactic, with them; it's a joy to read and a joy to review. The resolution Alex and Stacey reach is as satisfying for the reader as the one Wyatt and Kendall come to. [br/][br/]Eternal Nights combines humor, intrigue, danger, some hot sex and some truly unforgettable characters into one fabulous package. Read Eternal Nights and you'll be hoping for your very own Wyatt...or maybe even your own Alex...I know I am.

Really enjoyed this story. Although this kind of setting isn't my usual taste, I would definitely try more books by Patti O'Shea.

Hero is military security for a government archaeological expedition on a recently discovered planet. Somebody's smuggling stuff off-world, and then one of his staff turns up murdered. The heroine—one of the scientists—has been trying to TELL him about the smuggling—she knows who it is. But then she disappears. And then he gets trapped with her inside one of the buildings in the city they're investigating. And she's been having these really weird dreams. Nice read. Elements of reincarnation and psychic stuff.
