The clock is ticking for Sam Temple and the kids of Perdido Beach but it's not the big one-five that they face now; it's starvation that threatens the FAYZ. In an abandoned mine shaft a faceless animal lurks, pulling the strings, toying with human and mutant alike. And he's hungry - hungry in the dark. An uneasy calm has settled over Perdido Beach. But soon, fear explodes into desperation as starvation sets in and the mob look to place blame. For the 'normals' the buck must stop somewhere: with the 'freaks'. More and more kids are developing strange powers and, just as frighteningly, so are the animals in the FAYZ: talking coyotes, swimming bats and deadly worms with razor-sharp teeth are just the beginning. For Sam Temple the strain of leadership is beginning to show and he's got more than just dwindling rations and in-fighting to worry about - Caine is back with the psychotic Whip-Hand, Drake, by his side. And in the background lies the greatest danger of all - and he too needs to be fed.

Characters/People edit see section history

  • Sam Temple: Leader of the kids in Perdido Beach, as well as most of the freaks. He and Caine are fraternal twins. He and Caine are the two oldest and second most powerful teens in the FAYZ. His abilities deal with light, shooting a powerful light ray from his palms when he's angry or frustrated, and creating balls of light when he's scared.
  • Caine Soren: Leader of the kids at Coates Academy. He is quite powerful, possessing the ability to create a telekinetic wave. He and Sam are fraternal twins, and he suffers from the constant need to prove himself better than his brother. His fatal flaw is his love for Diana, who often impairs his better judgement. He always needs to be in control.
  • Astrid Ellison: "Astrid the Genius" Sam's girlfriend. No powers.
  • Little Pete: Severely autistic. Four years old. Is a mutant but power is unknown.
  • Diana Ladris: Diana serves Caine, at least, as long as it serves her purpose. She looks out only for herself, denying any emotions toward others, as they might serve to be her downfall. She has the power to read the power levels of others, like bars on a cell phone, and uses this to warn Caine of possible threats.
  • Drake: Power hungry, sadistic. Drake will stop at nothing to get what he wants, and what he wants is to be in charge, despite his lack of leadership skills. He likes to see people in pain, particularly Diana, who has been marked as untouchable by her association with Caine. He was given a tentacle-like whip arm by the Darkness, and in return he serves it's will.
  • Edilio: Sam's good-looking Honduran sidekick. He serves Sam faithfully, despite growing divisions between the normal kids, like him, and the freaks.
  • Quinn: Sam's best friend. Quinn is normal, and without the surf to fill his time, he begins looking for ways to solve the problems that plague the small community.
  • Lana: Lana has the power to heal, and because of this she is desired by many parties. She dislikes being depended on by so many people, and tends to keep to herself, living up in the resort down the highway. Her constant companion is a dog named Patrick.
  • Computer Jack: A genius with a computer, he is often awkward in everyday social interaction. He is desired by both the Perdido Beach kids and the Coates Academy kids for his skills, and his somewhat cowardly nature leads him to give in to threats easily. He possesses super strength, which only makes him more ill-at-ease with his own personality. He has a crush on Brianna.
  • Brianna: She calls herself "The Breeze", and fancies herself a super hero. She can run at extremely high speeds, and serves Sam as a messenger.
  • Albert: Albert is one of the few kids who possesses the initiative to look ahead and plan for the future. He is normal, but carries his weight by designing schemes meant to gather useful supplies from kids, and create motivation for them to do their part to help in Perdido Beach.
  • Dekka: Lesbian, is one of the freaks. She has the power to reverse gravity.
  • Howard: Orc's right-hand man.
  • Hunter: Hunter is a freak with the ability to emit a microwave blast from his palms.
  • Brittney: Killed soon after being introduced.
  • Hank: He is Zil's right hand man. Part of the Human Crew.
  • Mary Terrafino: Known to many as Mother Mary, she cares for the little kids, spending many days and sleepless nights trying to take care of those nobody else will claim responsibility for. The lack of food is an added pressure, and her anorexia/bulimia drives her to starve herself of food.
  • Antoine: A druggie and a drunkie. Against "freaks" to an extreme.
  • Taylor: A mutant with the ability to teleport short distances at a time. Serves Sam. Used to be a Coates kid until she was rescued from her concrete prison.
  • John: Mary's younger brother. Helps at the daycare.
  • Lance: Lance is one of the leaders of The human crew. Zil believes that Lance is what makes the Human Crew cool.
  • E.Z.: A normal kid, killed by carnivorous worms in the first chapter. Dubbed "E.Z. killers" or zekes, these worms plague the kids for the rest of the book. Had an iPod.
  • Orc: Once a bully, now the FAYZ's youngest alcoholic. After being mauled by a pack of coyotes, his skin healed as rock, which covers most of his body. He's nearly invincible, except for his Achilles heel, this one patch of skin on his cheek which remains normal.
  • Orsay: She was alone at the ranger station in the national park after the adults disappeared.
  • Zil: Normal. After being humiliated by Duck, he starts a campaign against the freaks, rallying other normal kids in his "Human Crew".
  • Gaiaphage: Commonly known as the Darkness.
  • Bug: can camouflage himself to become nearly invisible. Serves as a spy for Caine Soren, Sam's twin brother.
  • Duck: The Human Drill

    Edilio and Sam
  • “Oh I see. It's my job to pick the fruit, and collect the trash, and ration the food, and catch Hunter, and stop Caine, and settle every stupid little fight, and make sure kids get a visit from the Tooth Fairy. What's your job, Zil? Oh, right you spray hateful graffiti. Thanks for taking care of that, I don't know how we'd ever manage without you.”

Reading Level: Young Adults

Recommended for 13+. The language isn't bad and there are a couple gory/disgusting scenes, but it is a big book that may be overwhelming to younger children. Not for the faint of heart.
