“The story of a poor white boy from Mauritius; his family is driven out of their home by a greedy relative; he searches for treasure on the island of Rodriguez; joins the army and fights in World War I; returns to Rodriguez and Mauritius. The story is interesting at times, and there is a lot of good description (Le Clezio's specialty) and an undercurrent of criticism of French colonialism and greed. However, I didn't really like the novel. The main character just didn't gain my sympathy; he was a complete non-entity who never grew up or accepted any responsibility, he just drifts from one impossible situation to another while everyone around him is oppressed, and he is always just searching for some personal way out, some escape from reality for himself alone.”

Something must have been lost in the translation because I did not find this novel involving at all. Long and involved descriptive passages might have been compelling in French, but not in English. I couldn't wait to finish it.”

C'est un long parcours dans les traces de lui-même, puisque soi-même, c'est le résultat d'une accumulation de générations.”
