Didn’t Like It“I tried to get into this book and I just couldn't. I've been trying to read the last few and forcing it. Time to stop. Just too shallow or light of a read I guess.” see full review » see other reviews » |

I just finished reading the book Forbidden Nights with a Vampire by Kerrelyn Sparks. The book takes place in modern day New York. The characters travel to various places such as Texas and Maine throughout the story too. The majority of the book takes place at Vanda’s house, Vanda’s club, or Roman’s townhouse.
Vanda Barkowski is the main character in the book. Vanda is a vampire that was born in 1917. She is wild and rebellious. Her purple spiky hair expresses her personality very well. She has almost every color cat suit that she wears with a whip tied around her waist. Vanda has problems that have not been dealt with. She thought of it as a dark time, “The coffin tucked away in the shadows of her mind slowly creaked open.” She tried to keep her past hidden. She has been through anger management twice, and both times seem to have failed. She thinks she can get out of the anger management classes by being more trouble than her sponsors can handle. She soon finds out that she is wrong. Her new sponsor is not about to let her get away with the act. He makes Vanda face her worst fears, revealing her past and resolving the issues that have been building up inside of her for almost ninety years.
Phil Jones works at Mackay Security & Investigation. He had been Vanda’s guard when she lived at the harem years ago. He is Vanda’s new anger management sponsor. Phil is hot, tall, muscular, and everything else that any girl could ever want. He seems to be the perfect match for Vanda. He did not like to be controlled so his father banished him. He is also a rebel, but he has his own secrets. He is just what Vanda is afraid of.
Roman Draganesti is the coven master of the east coast vampires. He invented synthetic blood. He owns four large Romatechs that make synthetic blood all around the country. He is Phil’s employer and the judge that sends Vanda into anger management class.
There are many people in the book that want Vanda dead. She is on the hit list of a very powerful man, Casimir. He is the leader of an army of bad vampires, the Malcontents, which are ready to do anything that he asks of them. Corky Courant, a news anchor, wants to destroy Vanda’s life also. She takes every chance that she gets to put something on her show that will ruin Vanda’s reputation. On her show, Corky says, “she is engaging once again in disgusting and violent behavior!” When she says this, she is referring to Vanda’s well known, out-of-hand behavior.
The story begins with Vanda going to court. She runs a night club for vampires, and a few of her male dancers get mad and decide to sue her. All the charges end up being dropped, but she must agree to go through anger management classes for the third time. When nobody volunteers to be her sponsor, Phil decides that it would be a good reason to be around her. They had the biggest crushes on each other when he was her guard years ago. Max, one of Vanda’s former employees that were suing her, makes several attempts to kill her. Phil saves her life numerous times. Phil then finds out that Casimir has a hit list. The attacks are supposed to start very soon. He goes to Vanda’s club to let her know, and he detects a bomb in her file cabinet. He rescues everyone in the club, and hides Vanda in a secluded cabin. Roman and the rest of his team decide that the best way to win the war against the Malcontents is to use Vanda as bait to reel them in.
A main theme in the book is once you get knocked down, get back up. Vanda loses everyone that she loves, but she is able to open up to Phil. She is afraid of getting hurt again, but she gives it a chance. When Phil is banished by his father, he finds a new place to live and a new life to live.
In my opinion, this is a very good book. The author has a way of luring in the reader and not letting go. The author makes the vampire world seem very real, even though it is not. This is a book that is not easily put down.
A weakness of the book is that it gets confusing at times. There are many similar and irregular names that occur. It takes a while to get used to all of the names and who is who.
If you want to find out if Vanda survives and if anything happens between her and Phil, you will have to read the book and find out.
