This book is a waste of time; there's a good review of it in the April 19 NY Times. It never occurred to me that the author thought she was writing some feminist manifesto or that some reviewers equated it with "Catcher in the Rye" or "The Female Eunuch". Please.

It's about a patetic...

It took me about 50 pages to get used to some of the very shocking things that Helen says (be prepared; it can get vulgar). But once you get past that barrier, it's just like any other book about a lonely adolescent coming to grips with themselves and their passage into adulthood. Towards the end, once you're desensitized to her tone, the actual character of Helen is increasingly appealing; and against all the odds, you find yourself liking her.

A fast read that was shocking and sometimes made me want to puke. It made me think differently about hygeine and stirred up my feelings more than most other books I've read.

Bored in a hospital bed, Helen reviews her life. Mostly it's about her strange habits and hobbies of eating dried cum from beneath her finger nails, dip testing her juices, asking boyfriends if they like anal sex chocolate-dipped, scratching her hemorrhoids, sticking avocado pits in her vagina, wiping her vulva on any toilet seat she meets, and other ridiculous abominable acts. Underneath is supposed to be a young adult struggling with her parents divorce so intent on getting them back together she risks serious injury. She is presented as fragile while trying to connect to others through gross acts, shocking germophobes by leaving tampons in elevators and piss dribbles across her room, getting her victims to eat her tears and throw her surgically removed remnants in the common trash. Overall repellent.

A shock value novel. Disgusting. How does a novel lacking in caliber like this get such acclaim and over a million copies printed? Many quotes say it breaks down the image of clean female sexuality. But it does this through a freak imaginary example--by a single case study on the extreme side of gross. This isn't an example of an average female at all. So it is very frustrating to call this feminist literature.

Interesting novel, certainly the first I've read to feature postfecal pain, but hopefully not the last.

This book was touted as a masterpiece of feminist literature, but I've never read a character that had less respect for herself. On top of that, I don't think it was an accurate portrayal of the average woman at all. The author was disgusting for kicks and it didn't really have a plot. Save yourself the time and skip this one.

Somewhat numbing and rather gross account of a young woman's unchecked exploration of her own body
