Mieville's not kidding when he says this book is very different from his Bas Lag and other fantasy stories. Not that that's a bad thing. I love to see writers pushing the boundaries of their style, voice, and form. This book is much more restrained than his others and is put together like a police procedural, with elements of the fantastic to it. I'm still trying to decide whether or not the whodunit resolution is a big letdown or not. (Don't worry, I won't spoil any of it for you.)

To a degree, he did a great job at sleight of hand, yet I almost wish the resolution had been closer to what he seemed to alluding to.
