I just finished reading the book and I must say, i was very disappointed.Just before "The Heir", i read "Home for the holidays", which on a scale of 100 i give just 40.The storyline was good but somehow, the story lacked depth. It seemed too shallw, too detached. There was a kind of barrier between me, the reader, and the characters, if you understand what I mean.
This led me to think, maybe Johanna Lindsey isn't as good as i thought she was.I have read many of her books in the past and I used to think she was a good writer but It's been a long time since I last read any, would I still like them if I were to read them now?
The first of her books i read was "So speaks the heart".It holds a special place in my heart, not only because it was my first Johanna Lindsey, but because it was my first Historical romance.Would i still like it now?I can't say, but two disappointments in a row by Johanna Lindsey is really sending the wrong signals to me.
My problem with "The Heir"?Well the book started out well.I loved Sabrina's character, her ability to make people laugh, her aunts' bickerng, the scandal making the rounds about her,how she met Duncan, how he didn't care about the scandal, even Ophelia's character.I liked the fact that Duncan was not impressed by Ophelia's beauty, I liked the way he said to his Grandfather'she won't do' on his way to the stairs , without even stopping, his frienship with Sabrina and everything.
But from the point where he slept with Sabrina the book really went sour for me.If one looks at it, what was the reason why the author had to say he slept with her in the first place since immediately after, he went to oplhelia's room to talk to her and someone saw them, and then he had to marry her because he had compromised her when the real peson he had compromised, the person he loved was Sabrina. Not once did he object to marrying Ophelia on the grounds that he loved Sabrina.I don't know why he kept that information to himself. That really spoilt the book for me.
Secondly, I think Johanna Lindsey just fancied the story about two people engaged to be married but did't like each other at all, but it did't fit this particular story at hand. She further spoilt it whem Ophelia had the discussion with his grandfather and realised that there were responsibilities expected of her which she couldn't discharge.I would have preferred it if to the very end, she still wanted to marry Duncan.
And then Duncan's Grandfather's talk with Sabrina. It was totally uncalled for, did'nt fit into the story. She had already slept with him when the Granfather warned her that what Duncan felt for her was not love but friendship. Her doubts were uncalled for, she had already slept with him for God's sake. She doubted him upto the time he proposed. That was soo unromantic.I her heart she should have known the truth.
And then that kidnapping was really in bad taste. The sottish bogue, even worse.I have read lots of books with the scottish brogue thing, but this one eally became cumbersome and unromantic
These are just a few reasons why the book turned out to be a disappointment.I have one more Johanna Lindsey to read and if i don't like it, I am afraid I would have to change my opinion of her.
