  • Cassandra Stuart: Cassie, 20, visiting her father in Texas, heroine of this story. A meddler by nature.
  • Catherine Stuart: Cassie's mother, lives in Wyoming, runs the Lazy S Ranch, estranged from husband, strong character and handsome woman.
  • Charles Stuart: Cassie's father, lives in Texas, estranged from wife, away on business much of this story.
  • R. J. Mackauley: Father of four sons, head of family, neighbor to Cassie's father. Red-brown hair and dark green eyes, tall and hot-tempered.
  • Marabelle: Cassie's pet, a black panther from Africa, gift of her grandfather
  • Jenny Catlin: Youngest of the Catlin family
  • Rafferty Slater: Hired hand on the Catlin ranch, bothered Cassie

  • Cauley, Texas: The town where Cassie's father lived.
  • The Double C Ranch: In Cauley, an exact duplicate of the home Charles Stuart built in Wyoming. Two stories, a wooden mansion-sized home that was designed more for the Northwest. It was surrounded by a porch that held chairs and rockers and a 2-seater swing. On the second floor there was a double-doored balcony. Outbuildings were located behind the house.
  • Lazy S Ranch: In Cheyenne, Wyoming, the duplicate of the Double C.
  • The Catlin Ranch: Spanish-style, large and impressive, with iron gates; adobe walls around it and its outbuildings.
