I heard Dr Spock speak on a few public occasions during the tumultuous '60s, and his politics were not then--and are even less now--my own.

That being said, however, Dr Spock, at least in this reprint of the 1957 "New Edition" of his 1945 childcare classic does not come across as permissive as he is often perceived to be. Consider his thoughts on punishment:
