I read Outliers by Gladwell earlier this year and thought this book might be to similar, but other than the theme they definitely take a different and complimentary approach to the topic of great performance. Gladwell tells some great stories about people, but leaves you hanging about what to do...

Given their connection to the current stories in the news (9/09), the author's choice of examples of successful performers can be ironic. With this exception, the general arguments are reasonable and clearly written.

Borrowed hardcopy from Caterpillar's Business Resource Center

Expanding on a landmark cover story in Fortune, a top journalist debunks the myths of exceptional performance.

One of the most popular Fortune articles in many years was a cover story called “What It Takes to Be Great.” Geoff Colvin offered new evidence that top performers in any field--from Tiger Woods and Winston Churchill to Warren Buffett and Jack Welch--are not determined by...

I read Outliers by Gladwell earlier this year and thought this book might be to similar, but other than the theme they definitely take a different and complimentary approach to the topic of great performance. Gladwell tells some great stories about people, but leaves you hanging about what to do with the information, or how that can apply to you. This book takes a much more scientific approach to breaking down the aspects of great performance, and how different approaches in life and business can be used to drive and create better performance. Colvin starts with the basic fallacy that talent and great performance are things that you are born with, and goes through aspect by aspect ultimately coming to the conclusion deep down many probably already know in that great performance is essentially a combination of what he calls 'Deliberate Practice' + Passion. An excellent book and well worth the read.

How do we improve? How do we help others improve?
How do we maximize talent? One of my favorites.

I learned a lot. So much that I'm willing to reconsider my prediliction for fiction. (Sigh) I wish I had time to review this right now, but, I just don't. Will have to wait for another day. Suffice to say, I am putting the concepts in this book to work every day.
