“I listened to Shanghai Girls during my commute. This wonderful novel begins in 1937 and follows two sisters, Pearl and May, for the next 20+ years. The story begins in Shanghai, when this city was considered to be the "Paris" of the eastern part of our world. The history is rich and I learned so much as I followed these two women from a world of wealth, to poverty in Los Angeles. Their struggles as illegal Chinese immigrants and their culture is enlightening. They begin life as "beautiful girls" in Shanghai, experience the horror of the Japanese invasion into China, and immigrate to a Los Angeles that is not welcoming. I highly recommend this book.”
