The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with millions of people to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living, or at least the undead, hell of that dreadful time.
"Two hundred million zombies. Who can even visualize that type of number, let alone combat it?...For the first time in history, we faced an enemy that was actively waging total war. They had no limits of endurance. They would never negotiate, never surrender. They would fight until the very end because, unlike us, every single one of them, every second of every day, was devoted to consuming all life on Earth."

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks just rocked! Basically, the book follows the Zombie War from the first cases of the infection to the panic as the general public discovered the danger to the mop up after the world was able to start fighting the outbreak. Told by the people who survived, the accounts provide an insight into human nature which ring true even though the book is fictional.

This is one of those books that makes you feel stupid just because the person who wrote it is just so clever! To write this book Brooks really had to storyboard years of history. He had to know where the plague started, how is spread and then how the world would fight an enemy that won't stop unless you cut off its head - literally.

Great book. I always liked the Living Dead movies, but this is way better. Certainly makes me think what I need to do to keep my family safe.

A bit overlong, but well-written early on.

This book reads like a nonfiction account of a long and terrible war. I think Max Brooks really found a zombie dimension and lived there for a long time--how else could he come up with this? It is realistic and entertaining, and I realize now that I've finished it how some of it sticks with me, such as that millions of zombies are still roaming the ocean bottoms and coming up occasionally along coasts (don't worry--there is manpower with technology on the watch for them.
