“This is a novella.
Wait, come back.
Many novels don't pack as much style, humour and intelligence into three times as many pages (about 120). The narrator has an enjoyable way of prolonging time, drawing it out so he can think. And thinking is what this book is about. Yes, he meets a girl, and her son, and her father. He and she take a trip. They both are languid. At a certain point the humour falls away and sadness enters. No, not a death, or a mortal illness, or a break-up, but a feeling about the world that settles down on the narrator's mind as the results of some camera shots take effect on him.
This is a quiet, lyrical, fluid work. Not a fast paced work, but the voice is genial (if never anyone's friend), and there is sufficient mystery in it for us to consider after the book is over. That's a lot for 120 pages (and an interview with the author is included), and the book fits into a coat pocket. It's a tender and intelligent work of fiction. ”
