“I think this book was a decent read. It was an autobiography that explained what life was like for a young boy named Sonny. He was growing up on the tough streets of Harlem. I thought that it could have been better in terms of character description, otherwise I thought this was a good book. I would recommend this for someone who would like to learn about the coming of age in the 1960's; and learn about the African American experience in New York City.”

I must say one of my favorites of all time. It gives such a real depiction of what it must have been like growing up on the streets of Harlem and it makes you feel like you are there feeling and going through everything that Claude Brown did. It is very inspiring and uplifting. But it does show the struggles, trials, and tribulations of growing up on the streets. This novel gives hope to those trying to make it out of the streets and shows that it can be done. As well as shows this is not the way you want to go if you don't have to. I say read it and let your children read it.”

do not read this book. It will just seem like a African American version of the book you've already read”
“Amazing!
Similar in setting and theme to Down These Mean Streets (also one of my favorites).
The story is gritty, exciting and also very enjoyable to read of a young boy growing up in Harlem during the 1930s and 40s. ”
“This was assigned reading for me in college. I don't remember the class or the professor but I remember this book. I loved it. I've always been disappointed that it's not better known. Read this book and pass it on...”

It is a great display of life and what people face and how some come out on top and others don't. It is also a great story of life in Harlem during a great era, 1940s - 1960s. I would advise everyone to read it. It's long, but worth it.”
